Why Do My Kids Needs Orthodontic Treatment?

Without orthodontic treatment, it’s easy for kids to develop problems with their teeth or bite. Things like crowded teeth or a misaligned bite can pose a certain risks over time. Misaligned or crowded teeth may make it difficult to maintain good oral hygiene in those areas, which can result in serious conditions such as gum disease, tooth decay, bone loss, and even tooth loss. If left untreated, these conditions get more difficult and costly to fix.

By getting your kids started with orthodontic treatment while they’re still young, you’re paving the way for them to enjoy a brighter and healthier future full of beautiful smiles.

Can I Wait To Get My Kid’s Orthodontic Treatment?

Children often begin orthodontic treatment around ages 9 through 14. The reason that this age range is recommended is because children are in a rapid stage of growth during this time.  This growth is a big advantage, since it makes it easier for your child’s orthodontist to shape the bite and teeth correctly. While your child can still get orthodontic treatment after this age, it may be longer, more difficult, and sometimes more costly as they get older.

What Happens During Adolescent Orthodontic Treatment?

The typical adolescent orthodontic treatment involves straightening the permanent teeth once they have erupted using braces or Invisalign.  This treatment is mainly to fix teeth alignment and bite issues such as crowding, gaps, or misaligned bites for a healthier smile.  To begin the treatment, Dr. Stock will take molds, photos, and radiographs of your child’s teeth and use these records to map out the path for the teeth to move into their ideal positioning. The amount of time needed for treatment varies from patient to patient, but Dr. Stock and her team will discuss the entire treatment process with you and your child in detail. If you have any questions, always feel free to ask during the appointment or give us a call.

What Is “Phase I” Treatment?”

Phase I treatment is typically preventative and for younger patients.  It iinvolves the use of various orthodontic appliances that are not braces. For example, Dr. Stock can use palatal expanders or space maintainers to ensure that there is enough room in the mouth for your child’s permanent teeth to develop, which can help prevent crowding. This treatment also has the potential to reduce the amount of time necessary for your child to be in full braces after all of the permanent teeth have erupted or at least make the treatment smoother and more comfortable.
